If packaged tourism, surrounded by American hotels and restaurants, has an epicenter, this would be the capital. The more than 700 islands are home to resort, after resort, after resort (and then add another million) for the legions of Americans who come to pretty much be in another version of America – only on an island in the Caribbean. Welcome to the Bahamas!
As indie travelers, it’s difficult (but not impossible) to get outside of the resort and cruise scene, as there are only a few hostels or backpacker type places, like the Surfer Haven’s Guesthouse. There are ways to head to the Bahamas and have an indie travel experience, but you’re going to have to put forth more effort than most other places. If that’s not your style, we suggest heading to many of the other islands in the Caribbean that are more geared towards indie travel (like Puerto Rico).
